You know, I really do respect technical prowess. Only problem is, most people seem to think that means how long John Petrucci can touch his dick in a new and different way. Fuck, doesn't Kenny G hold the record for longest note held because he's such a king of circular breathing? Of course he's good at it, dude's been breathing out of his nose for so long thanks to all the dick he sucks. I'm going to set a record for the word dick today maybe.
No, real technical ability is shit like Bach's fugues, where about five different melodies all compliment each other and you can write an entire book on one of them (and many academics have), not this garbage hitting shit fast. It's that real kind of ability that makes Mirrored such a good album.
These guys know how to put together a song. And yes, despite the elf vocals that sound like someone put the singer's testicles into a vise, they are all men as far as I know. This shit is so complex and nice sounding and really just in your face. I don't think it's party music, unless your parties are full of dicks that wear scarves where they will all nod their heads and fold their arms and lean slightly askew on objects. Somehow Battles got indie cred, and so it's hard to say you like it anymore without someone rolling their eyes.
But fuck you, it's a good album. Short and like a punch in the face, it's not something that goes well in the background of anything. I wonder how many kids tried to drop DXM to this shit and ended up crawling in the corner to die, because this is some intricately composed stuff and I am sure you'd hallucinate mice shitting blood.
And the fucking elf vocals.
